Gaggenau is a town in the west of Baden-Württemberg about eight kilometres northeast of Baden-Baden. It is the second largest town in the Rastatt district after the district capital Rastatt and before the town of Bühl, and together with the neighbouring town of Gernsbach to the south forms a medium-sized centre within the Middle Upper Rhine region.
The districts of Freiolsheim, Michelbach, Ottenau, Bad Rotenfels, Hörden, Oberweier, Selbach and Sulzbach belong to Gaggenau.
The history of Gaggenau(excerpt from the municipal page):
Situated at the foot of the Murg valley, the town was first mentioned in 1243. In the 17th century, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm laid the foundations for the industrial development of Gaggenau by leasing the newly built hammer mill, which over the years developed into a vibrant industrial centre. In addition to the listed glassworks, whose fine glass products delighted a wide range of buyers worldwide, the traditional factory of the Daimler AG company still stands here today - the oldest car factory in Germany and the cradle of the Unimog, which is valued worldwide. A museum is dedicated to this universal motor vehicle, which was produced in Gaggenau for over half a century. Gaggenau's industrial spectrum would be inconceivable without a number of other well-known companies, medium-sized businesses and specialist shops for upmarket requirements, such as Dambach-Werke, Protektorwerk Florenz Maisch, Holzwerke Rahner, Franz Grötz, Gerhard Lang, König Metall, Z-Müller, City-Kaufhaus, Kohlbecker Architekten & Ingenieure and many others. The large district town of Gaggenau with its 31,000 inhabitants is not only an attractive business location but also a popular place to live, thanks to new urban development accents with a wide range of health, school, leisure and cultural facilities and optimum transport links.
